Design Problems

by Sherri Moorer

Zack

I have poor spatial skills. I often joke that I would get lost leaving my driveway if I didn’t have to go to work five days a week. Most people think I’m exaggerating until they make the mistake of asking me for directions. GPS is a necessity of modern life for those of us who are spatially challenged. Unfortunately, it can’t help me with organizing cages, which is a challenge I face every time I get Zack and Bubbles new perches or toys, as I did recently.

Don’t get me wrong. Cages are much better than they were in the mid-1980’s when I got Samson, my first parakeet. They’re built efficiently with ease of cleaning, function, and bird comfort in mind. They’re also bigger, to provide more space for stretching out those wings to play, exercise, or laze around and beak grind while watching TV. You’d think the modern design would make finding places for those various perches and toys easier. Instead, it’s just enough rope to hang myself.

Read about Sherri’s spatial conundrums while attempting to outfitting Bubbles’ and Zack’s houses with new perches and toys on our Feathered Frenzy page.

Trixie Red Bum: a love to last forever

Trixie

Love has grey feathers, a mischievous glint in expressive eyes, and a beautiful heart and soul.  Love has a name, Trixie.  You left mom way too soon Trixie.

A few months ago, Trixie left her mom Tracy’s side to fly to the Rainbow Bridge, leaving mom and countless Anipals devastated and heartbroken.  The photos and videos that follow are a tribute to Trixie, a beautiful girl who will forever hold a permanent place in her mom’s heart and soul.  You are so dearly missed every day Trixie.

This is a tribute to you sweet Trixie Red Bum, a feathered star that shone bright and beautifully in our hearts for a while, but was called to the heavens to watch over mommy Tracy and your flock much too soon.

Morty is full of hot air – Turbo Jet (Vacuum) Air!

Greetings to all my favorite parrot friends! Alexa is in a mood after she rolled under the couch. She blames me for her clumsiness! Good help is hard to find these days!

Morty's advert

Recently, I received an interesting letter from a parrot owner.

Dear Morty,

I live in a three bedroom home and have ten parrots. I work 12 hour shifts and when I get home I am too tired to clean. It seems like every bird has the habit of throwing their fruit, veggies, seed, and pellets on the floor! When I go into their room at night, it is a filthy mess. I cant even get near their cages! Is there anything on the market that could help me? PLEASE DON’T TELL ME TO GET A VACUUM CLEANER! I have three. I am looking for a piece of industrial equipment. Price is not a problem.

Welcome Ruby!

A baby red factor African Grey birdie entered the lives of Oscar and her mom Pauline recently.  While Pauline doted over the wee one for days and weeks (to Oscar’s dismay), the Twitter and Facebook flock waited with bated breath for pictures – and of course the announcement of the name of this little cutie.

After a few weeks of naming deliberations and anxious online excitement, we were introduced to Ruby!  Welcome Ruby!

Here’s baby Ruby as an upstart 🙂

Ruby finding her feet and showing off her little red feathers.

Ruby demonstrates to mom and all that she’s becoming a big birdie, learning to climb and perch!

Ruby joins her flock in the living room, enjoying the comfort of her blankie while Oscar keeps a watchful eye over her.

And last, but not least, the one photo to be used on Ruby’s 16th Hatchday – probably at her prom party 🙂

No Assembly Required?

Morty

Morty solicits Alexa’s help to purchase what he thought would be a lovely playpen he could enjoy on his back deck.  Well, let’s just say that what the UPS man delivered wasn’t what Morty had ordered… or planned.
