Bird Poem Cryptogram
Here is an encrypted famous poem with a bird theme. To solve it, figure out what letter each number stands for. You can use the grid on top to keep track of the substitutions. Not every letter may present. I have started you off with three letters and their corresponding numbers. It’s up to you to figure out the rest! The answer is provided at the bottom of this page.

To play Sudoku, fill in every empty box with one of the nine letters listed below. Each letter can appear only once in a row, once in a column, and once in a 3 x 3 grid box.
Unscramble the nine letters and answer the following question:
- These cute little African parrots come in many species and colors.

Find as many bird body part words of three letters or more as you can. Words are made up from letters that are horizontally, vertically, or diagonally adjacent in the grid. You may use each letter only once per word. I found 15 words. How will you do?
(example – locate the word “Cake”)
- 1-5 words: You love birds, but they’re a mystery to you
- 6-9 words: You can find your way around a bird
- 10-13 words: You’re a bird brain (that’s a compliment!)
- 14-15 words: That’s why they call you Leader of the Flock!
Bonus: Three more things birds possess which are not body parts.
Answers can be found at the bottom of this page.

Hope is the thing with feathers
by Emily Dickinson
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
